Registrations now open for the Dunedin field trip
Join us in November for a southern adventure – who wouldn’t want to be King or Queen of the castle? On the first day we will be visiting the garden of the heritage property, Olveston and then dropping into Ribbonwood Nurseries who are known for their excellence in propagating native plants. After this, we will tour through the Chinese Garden, where all of the rocks and materials were shipped over from China, and built by Chinese experts as part of our sister-city exchange. This garden is the most authentic scholar’s garden in New Zealand. We will visit the Dunedin Botanic Garden, which has a six-star rating. reflecting its status as one of the top gardens in New Zealand. As plant fans, we will get a sneak-peak behind the scenes of the new multi-million dollar propagation unit, which is not open to the public. A Curator will show us some of the garden themes that make this visit a special experience.
On the second day, we will head out along the beautiful Otago Peninsula to appreciate the coastal views as we wind our way up to Larnach Castle. There we will have a personal tour of the garden and time to enjoy the spectacular views. For a short time you can imagine having your morning tea every day in the heritage ballroom.
Later in the afternoon, we will visit Hereweka Garden with its rare off-shore plants, tucked away in its own special microclimate.
On the last day, (half day) we will explore the other side of the Otago Harbour visiting Port Chalmers and Orokonui Sanctuary. The increase in bird life since Orokonui was established is terrific. We will then head out to Blueskin Nursery and their popular retail garden centre. Lunch is in a special heritage church and for those who want a really local craft beer, it is just down the road at Arc Brewing. Say hi to the Dunedin locals.
